Rivals challenge ANC secretary-general promises

In a recent turn of events, ActionSA has raised strong objections against Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), accusing him of spreading misinformation concerning the retrieval of miners’ bodies from the ill-fated Lily Mine in Mpumalanga. Mbalula had boldly asserted in May that the bodies of the trapped miners would be recovered within three months, with plans to subsequently reopen the mine. However, as the three-month mark nears its end, these promises appear to be far from realization, prompting ActionSA’s criticism.

The Lily Mine disaster, which took place several years ago, left three workers trapped underground when a section of the mine collapsed. Since then, efforts have been ongoing to recover their bodies and potentially revive the mining operations. Mbalula’s pronouncement in May had instilled hope among the affected families and the broader public, who have been waiting for closure on this tragic incident.

ActionSA, a prominent political party advocating for change and accountability, has stepped forward to challenge the Secretary-General’s credibility. They assert that Mbalula’s statements lack concrete evidence or a feasible plan for execution, making them nothing more than false promises. With the three-month deadline swiftly approaching, the families of the trapped miners are left disillusioned and seeking answers.

Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda were trapped underground after a tremor collapsed part of the mine in February 2016.

“More than three months have passed since Mbalula made the promise to the families at a worker’s day event where the mine is located in Louisville near Barberton. Since then, no progress has been achieved, and instead, ongoing litigation has played out in concluding rescue operations,” said ActionSA.

At the time this incident took place, Mbalula wasn’t the secretary-general of the ruling party, but he was a minister under the administration of then president Jacob Zuma.
