Minister Pravin Gordhan is seen at Parliament in Cape Town during a meeting about Eskom claims.
A few hours after ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan could be fired if he didn’t do his job, the ANC did a U-turn and said that Gordhan’s job was safe.
Mbalula told the ANC Women’s League meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday that the party expected its people in government to do their jobs well.
He told Gordhan in particular that he had to work quickly to fix the problems with the country’s rail system, or he would be fired.

“Now I’ll tell Pravin Gordhan that I was there with him. I was also in charge of transportation. “Comrade Pravin, move faster, or we will move you,” I was told.
“We need to get all the trucks off the road because they are killing people. Trains must transport goods off of the roads rather than trucks. Let’s not act like we’re not in government. He said, “We are in charge.”
Andile Sangqu, who was a top executive at Anglo American, has been named the new chair of Transnet.
But on Saturday night, the ANC said that Mbalula’s words were not entirely true and that Gordhan’s job was safe.
“The minister of public enterprises will not be able to solve the problems with our train transportation system by himself.
In a statement, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said, “The fact that a clarion call is made to the minister to speed up policy interventions to fix our rail and freight logistics is not the same as a call for him to be fired.”
“We have a duty to come up with good answers to all of these problems. Bhengu-Motsiri said that the government should work with all South Africans to find programs that will help people live better lives.
Gordhan recently said that a new board had been put in place at Transnet to help fix the failing state-owned company.
