Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono recently took to Twitter to express his astonishment and critique the comments made by Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa. Chin’ono accused Mbalula of spreading false information and demonstrated his ignorance on several issues.

One of the points Chin’ono corrected was Mbalula’s statement about UK sanctions against Zimbabwe. He clarified that the UK does not have sanctions against the country as a whole but rather against five individuals implicated in acts of violence and corruption. This highlights Mbalula’s inaccurate claim of sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, Chin’ono disputed Mbalula’s assertion that Zimbabweans did not migrate to South Africa before 2000. He referred to historical evidence, specifically the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (Wenela), which demonstrates that Zimbabweans have been migrating to South Africa for over 70 years. Chin’ono found Mbalula’s ignorance on this matter embarrassing.

Chin’ono then focused on the real reasons why Zimbabweans are currently seeking refuge in South Africa. He emphasized that the dire state of healthcare in Zimbabwe is a driving factor. Despite the pressing need for improved medical facilities, such as maternity theaters, the Zimbabwean government has failed to address this issue adequately. As a result, many Zimbabweans choose to give birth in South Africa due to the higher risk of maternal mortality in their home country. Chin’ono also highlighted the lack of functioning radiotherapy machines for cancer treatment in Zimbabwe’s public hospitals.

Additionally, Chin’ono criticized Mbalula for claiming that the South African government respects the decisions of Zimbabweans. He accused South Africa of endorsing rigged elections in Zimbabwe and disregarding the will of the Zimbabwean people, who have consistently voted for a change in government since 2000. Chin’ono argued that both South Africans, who are deceived by the ruling ANC party, and Zimbabweans, who are lied to by the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party, are being misled by their respective ruling parties.

He believes that both South African and Zimbabwean citizens are being misled by their respective ruling parties.
