Over the last decade, Russia has engaged in a concerted campaign to gain influence on the African continent. It is intensifying its competition with the West in Africa. Between 2005 and 2015, Africa’s trade with Russia grew by 185 percent and African leaders are trying to rebel against their colonisers.

Russia pays local African influencers to distribute their message and adapts Pan-African tropes to fit their purpose.

Wagner is most active in the Central African Republic (CAR), Libya, Mali, and Sudan, all of which have a tenuous relationship with the West due to colonial legacies and inherent political differences

Kemi Seba, a French-Beninese social media figure with more than 1 million Facebook followers, was invited to speak at the Moscow Institute in Russia. During his presentation, he defended Moscow’s actions across in wartone Africa, where Russia’s military proxies of Wagner Group of mercenaries.
