Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to engage with leaders from African countries during the upcoming Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg. The Kremlin announced that on July 28, President Putin will hold a working lunch with a group of African state leaders to discuss Ukraine-related issues. The Kremlin expressed its appreciation for the sincere efforts made by African partners in seeking a political resolution to the conflict.
The summit, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, will see the participation of several African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. So far, 49 African countries have confirmed their attendance. The summit aims to adopt a declaration outlining coordinated approaches to foster Russian-African cooperation.
One of the key topics on the agenda will be the termination of a deal that previously allowed Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea to global markets, including Africa. Moscow has attempted to address African partners’ concerns regarding this issue in recent days, seeking to reassure them.
During the plenary session, President Putin is expected to deliver a significant statement addressing matters related to food and fertilizers. Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov conveyed that the focus will be on enhancing Africa-Russia relations with an emphasis on supporting African nations’ sovereign development. This will involve ensuring equitable access to food, fertilizers, modern technologies, and energy resources. President Putin is also scheduled to hold individual meetings with several African leaders, including those from Cameroon, Senegal, South Africa, and the Central African Republic.
