The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have found themselves facing a series of setbacks in recent by-elections across South Africa. With performances of 0% and 1% – akin to binary numbers in a digital machine – the party has been unable to secure significant support. In the latest round of by-elections, held in various wards, the EFF once again encountered disappointing results. This article delves into the outcomes of these crucial contests, shedding light on the political landscape and the challenges faced by the EFF.

Ward 27 (Pacaltsdorp) in George, Garden Route: In this fiercely contested by-election, the Democratic Alliance (DA) emerged victorious with 36% of the votes, followed by GOOD (26%), PBI (19%), and PA (18%). The EFF secured a mere 2% of the votes. The ANC received less than 1% of the votes, highlighting the significant gap between the leading parties and the EFF. Ward 6 (Ekuthuleni Nduro) Mthonjaneni in King Cetshwayo: In a heated electoral battle, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) triumphed with 63% of the votes, while the ANC secured 33%. Both the EFF and an independent candidate received 2% of the votes.

Ward 2 (Ntanyeni Ekuphiweni) Nkandla, King Cetshwayo: The IFP dominated this rural ward, obtaining an overwhelming 77% of the votes, while the ANC secured 21%. Once again, the EFF was limited to just 2% of the votes, demonstrating the party’s challenges in appealing to voters in different regions. Ward 20 (Borcherds) in George, Garden Route: In a closely contested by-election, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) secured a surprising victory with 26% of the votes. The DA, the incumbent party, trailed closely with 23%, followed by the ANC (22%), and PBI (21%).

The EFF once again received a mere 2% of the votes, while GOOD obtained 6%. This outcome indicates the growing competitiveness of smaller parties and the EFF’s struggle to make significant gains. Ward 16 (New Dawn Park) George in Garden Route: The DA secured the majority of the votes in this ward with 46%, followed by the PA (22%), and GOOD (15%). Both PBI and the ANC received 15% and 1% of the votes, respectively, while the EFF was limited to just 1%. This outcome adds to the string of disappointing results for the EFF. Ward 7 (Freedom Square Rocklands) in Mangaung: The ANC retained this ward with 54% of the votes, followed by the independent candidate Rampai (33%). The EFF obtained 9% of the votes, while the DA secured 3%. A new party, Progress, garnered less than 1% of the votes. Although the EFF’s share increased slightly in this ward, they remain significantly behind the leading parties.
