Jacob Zuma to send back in jail. Look what has been said about him| Makgothi Thobakgale involved

On Thursday, August 10, Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale is due to announce whether former President Jacob Zuma must return to prison to complete his sentence. Many people in KwaZulu-Natal are concerned about a repeat of the July 2021 unrest.

Members of the SAPS and SANDF have been deployed to KwaZulu-Natal and other potential hotspots across South Africa, saying they are “ready for any eventuality” as the commissioner of Correctional Services prepares to announce whether former President Jacob Zuma should return to prison to serve the remainder of his 15-month sentence for contempt of court.

When Zuma was caught at his home in Nkandla and imprisoned at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in July 2021, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng erupted in a flurry of violence, looting, and arson, killing more than 350 people and costing the economy more than R50 billion.

Zuma was released by former Correctional Services chief Arthur Fraser after serving barely two months of his 15-month sentence. The Democratic Alliance and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) appealed his decision, and the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) declared in November 2022 that Zuma’s release was illegal.

“Whether the time spent by Mr. Zuma on unlawfully granted medical parole should be taken into account in determining the remaining period of his incarceration is not a matter for this court to decide,” the SCA said in its judgment.
