Former president Jacob Zuma arrived at his Nkandla homestead at 09.15 after being released from the Estcourt Correctional Centre. Reporters from News24 saw his blue-light convoy drive into his homestead, consisting of four VIP cars followed by a white bakkie.
The question on many South Africans’ lips is why President Cyril Ramaphosa granted clemency to Jacob Zuma, who had been convicted of contempt of court. It has been speculated that the upcoming elections may have been considered because the ANC did not want to risk alienating the former president’s supporters, which could have reduced voter turnout.
On July 15, 2023, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema called for the president to pardon Jacob Zuma, a move that would likely increase support for the EFF in next year’s election. Therefore, the ANC decided to free Msholozi.
An ANC member thanked Julius Malema for his part in releasing Jacob Zuma, expressing their hope that the favour will be returned when it comes to casting votes in the next election.
“We Thank President Julius Malema For Standing With President Zuma In these Challenging times. We Are Going To Return The Favour In The Next Elections,” He wrote.
