Sithole said Dlamini fought hard hoping that ANC would have its first female president, but it was not possible. She has now lost support on the ground after receiving less than 200 votes at the women’s league conference which was held at Nasrec.

“Bathabile Dlamini wanted a female president to lead the ANC, she mobilised women and came with the name of a woman, supported it and campaigned for a woman President. She did not just sing women empowerment to sound relevant, she believed in women leadership, she fought for women,” said Nathi Sithole.

Supporters of Bathabile Dlamini said she revived the ANC Women’s League, and made it more active. They said most importantly, she gave space for ANC young women to lead and making it more inclusive, and active in its structures and added into the ANC NEC.

Social critics, however argue that Bathabile Dlamini should not have contested. She thought that she still has influence, and the results proved her otherwise. ANC Women’s League elected a new president who is old. The issue is not about Bathabile Dlamini being old, but she was no longer a favourable candidate.
