ODM Chairman John Mbadi has admitted that things are not as they used to be in Azimio. He alleges that this time around, Azimio is doing worse than it did during the 11th Parliament.

First, he mentions Azimio’s numbers and says that most of its members have joined hands with the Kenya Kwanza government, making it hard for them to drive any agenda successfully.

Comparing the 12th Parliament and 11th Parliament in terms of opposition, Mr Mbadi notes that in the 11th Parliament, the opposition under the umbrella of CORD was able to maintain its numbers even though Jubilee had more numbers.

He highlights that they successfully rejected the 2020/2021 budget when they realised that it did not address the immediate need of Kenyans, which at the time was the issue of Covid 19, but this time around, Azimio is unable to oppose the government’s policies.

Poking holes into Azimio’s leadership, Mr Mbadi points fingers at the leader of the minority in the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandanyi, for failing to give clear guidance to the members.

Mr Mbadi alleges that Mr Wandanyi has been communicating to members through SMS instead of being physically present on the floor of Parliament to guide them.f3c20bae9203490a8152bf9c8d031baf?quality=uhq&resize=720

“The Minority Leadership needs to do a little more in terms of being clear with communication with the members and being present all the time to whip members in the same direction. You can’t just whip members through SMSS. You need to be there physically. I have been a Minority leader, and I know,” Mr Mbadi said.

He however makes it clear that he is not interested in the leadership and asks the current leaders to pull up their socks.

Further, he admits that it will be hard to challenge the Kenya Kwanza government due to the lack of numbers and poor leadership.

“As it is today, it is really not easy to challenge Kenya Kwanza’s policies from Parliament until maybe some years when real- ity will dawn on some of these misguided members who probably due to lack of experience think there is something to gain from Kenya Kwanza. Parliament as it is today, sadly may not hold Kenya Kwanza accountable but the people of Kenya would,” he added.
