“It Won’t Work” Economic Expert Says on Azimio Anti-Tax Demos, Suggest the Best Way to Solve The Stalemate

Economic Expert Francis Omondi has criticized the anti-government protests by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance camp against President William Ruto’s decision to sign in to law the Finance Bill 2023.

Even though the implementation of the Finance Act 2023 has been suspended by the High Court, the opposition led by the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been conducting the demos, saying they will continue until President Ruto heeds to their demands, repeals the Act and reduces the high cost of living.

Speaking on Monday evening with KTN News, Omondi argued that staging protests was not going to reduce the cost of living as propagated by the opposition, and would instead made life harder than it is now.

“The fact remains that the political protests are not good for the economy, they are seriously hurting our economy. If we continue with these kind of political protests, the cost of living is going to go higher than it is now. We therefore need an immediate stop to those protests.”

Omondi went to note the best way out is to have President Ruto call for exclusive talks, and not the bipartisan talks, which will address all issues affecting Kenyans and bring everyone on board and not only politicians.

“The two political factions should come up with mechanism to stop the protests as soon as possible. They can later come up with a structured dialogue that is inclusive and would bring together the political class, the civil society, the private sector and also the religious leaders,” said Omondi.

Political leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance have argued that the demos called by Raila are aimed at sabotaging the economy for him to get a handshake with President Ruto.
