President William Ruto in an interview with France 24 disclosed that Kenya has taken a huge step in stabilizing the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ruto stated that as a country, they will not walk away from the menace in DRC because the people in DRC deserve a stable environment. He said that they will not turn a blind eye as DRC faces instability.
“We will not walk away from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The problem in DRC is our problem. The people of DRC deserve a much better and more peaceful environment. We cannot continue turning a blind eye to DRC because the country is within our region,” President Ruto told France 24.
He went ahead and heaped praise on Kenyan forces. He asserted that since Kenyan troops stepped in DRC, the M23 rebels have moved further from the capital. He said that there is a joint effort to identify a cantonment area for M23 rebels.
“Kenya went to DRC, the M23 rebels were 7 kilometres away from Home but today there have moved further and there is the cessation of hostility within the last three months. In the last 3 days, there has been a joint effort by Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and DRC to identify a cantonment area for M23 rebels,”
William Ruto added that in the last 6 months, they have stabilised DRC, something that has not been done for the last 30 years. He stated that there is general acceptance that DRC is at peace.
“We have taken a huge step in stabilizing DRC. In the last 6 months we have managed to do what has not been done for 30 years: stabilizing DRC and right now there is a chance that M23 rebels will be cantoned. There is general acceptance that a lot has been done,”
