Political Analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has given his opinion that the fresh bi-partisan talks between the Azimio Coalition and the Kenya Kwanza faction are likely to fail. Ngunyi expressed his mistrust in the talks, citing the lack of a strong grassroots foundation as a reason for potential collapse.
Ngunyi also questioned the purpose of the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo’s visit to Kenya in relation to these talks.
In his analysis, Ngunyi identified the conflict between Azimio Chief Raila Odinga and President William Ruto as being driven by personal egos. These ego clashes may pose a significant challenge to the success of the dialogue and could potentially hinder any meaningful agreement between the two factions.
“These talks will collapse. No grassroots basis at all.
“I do not get it. What is Obasanjo coming to Kenya to mediate? Political egos between Dynasties and the Hustler nation? This is a total waste of our national imagination ” he posed.
The Azimio Coalition has agreed to nominate five representatives to be part of a new dialogue panel, which will also include five members from Kenya Kwanza. The talks will be facilitated by former Nigerian President Obasanjo, and they come after Deputy President Ruto reportedly declined an invitation from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi stated that the decision to participate in the dialogue was reached after consultations with the Kenya Kwanza faction under the facilitation of Obasanjo. The goal of the talks is to seek a democratic and peaceful resolution to the issues affecting the nation.
Under the new agreement, both the Azimio La Umoja and Kenya Kwanza factions will establish a committee of ten members, five from each side. The committee will consist of four members from outside Parliament (two from each side), the leaders of Majority and Minority from the National Assembly, and an additional four Members of Parliament (two from each side).
Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi stated that further details on this initiative will be communicated at a later time. With this development, Azimio’s plans to issue new directives concerning their anti-government street protests have been put on hold.
