Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday announced that a new Nairobi Expressway exit plaza will be launched at the Greenpark.
The CS noted that the project set to be finished in mid-January is meant to help reduce traffic congestion and improve vehicle flow in Nairobi.
He also announced that plans are underway to add two more lanes to the current three at the Museum Hill exit.
While announcing the expected changes, the CS lauded the Nairobi Expressway saying it has helped cut travel time from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Nairobi from two hours to 20 minutes.
The CS also noted that the project, which he says is a shining monument to what private-public partnerships can do, has created job opportunities for Kenyans.
“It has also become a major job creator, employing 6,000 Kenyans during its construction and now offering 500 permanent jobs. Some 200,000 subscribers have enrolled for the E-Ticketing system in 19 months and the road has carried 26 million vehicles, proving that there was indeed demand for it,” Murkomen said.
At the same time, CS Murkomen also lauded the project saying it has enabled technology transfer to Kenya. He also said that the project’s smart traffic monitoring system has enhanced security and emergency response.
This, according to the CS, will provide a good benchmark for the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) which is ready to be rolled out.

Further, the CS expressed gratitude to China for its efforts in being receptive to investing in the country. He also announced plans to develop new roads across the country.
“A long-term plan to develop roads across the country is underway, some of these roads are; the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and Athi River-Namanga highways, Kisumu-Isibania and Kiambu Road,” Murkomen said.
