One of the four CIT Heist suspects who were fatally shot by police in Ga-rankuwa, north of Pretoria, was Kgomotso “Gootso” Maleka.

Maleka once became well-known on social media following her theft of a phone at a Wits University Freshers Ball.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, “it is reported that the multi-disciplinary team received intelligence on a group of suspects planning to commit a CIT robbery between North West and Gauteng.”

She added that a squad had been assembled to watch the males.

“As their car turned towards Mmakau, it was seen, and a fast-paced pursuit ensued, and later, a shootout ensued as soon as the suspects realised they were about to be captured.”

“Four of the suspects were fatally wounded and three unlicensed firearms, two handguns as well as a rifle were recovered from the scene.”

Mogale said the investigation continues.
