Wycombe’s David Wheeler received one of the quickest red cards in history when he was sent off after just ten seconds in the 4-2 defeat to Barnsley!

Wheeler had only just come off the bench for the League One match at Adams Park when he lashed out at Corey O’Keefe near the touchline with his first challenge.

O’Keefe went down holding his ankle and referee Dean Whitestone ran over to show Wheeler a straight red.

Wheeler had not even touched the ball during his shortest stay on the pitch and although he appeared bewildered by the decision, he received no sympathy from his manager Matt Bloomfield.

“His reaction was not good,” the Wycombe boss said. “He was sent away and rightly so, so I’m not complaining about that.”

However, Bloomfield accused O’Keefe of provoking his red-faced player, saying, “Dave is off the field to let the ball go over his head because it’s out of play, and a left elbow goes to his jaw .

“I saw the provocation and his reaction is wrong.”

If Wheeler’s eviction is confirmed after ten seconds, it would earn him a place in the record books.

The previous fastest red card in English football was Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, who was sent off after just thirteen seconds during a match against Wolves in 2000.
