Princess Kate completes chemotherapy, set to return to public life

Kate, the Princess of Wales, has finished her chemotherapy and will soon return to public engagements. The royal family faced turmoil with the cancer diagnoses of both Kate and King Charles III. On Monday, the 42-year-old wife of Prince William shared a video with her family, reflecting on the past nine months and expressing her “relief” at completing treatment. She emphasised the sudden changes her family faced and the unpredictability of the cancer journey, which she described as both complex and daunting.

The year began with rising health concerns for the royals. In January, news emerged that King Charles would undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate and Kate would face abdominal surgery. By February, Buckingham Palace confirmed Charles was being treated for an unspecified type of cancer. Six weeks later, Kate revealed she was also undergoing cancer treatment, quelling rampant speculation about her health following her surgery.

These announcements led to a wave of public support but also increased pressure on the royal family. Queen Camilla and Princess Anne, the king’s sister, assumed more responsibilities to manage the royal duties. Prince William also took a break to support his wife and their three children. King Charles resumed his public duties in late April with a visit to a cancer treatment centre in London and plans to travel to Australia and Samoa in the autumn.

Kate acknowledged that although her chemotherapy has ended, her recovery journey will be lengthy, and she intends to take it one day at a time. She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and drew strength from those helping her. In June, she mentioned having both good and bad days during her treatment. Despite stepping back from most public engagements, Kate made two appearances this year: during the king’s birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, in June and at Wimbledon’s men’s final in July, where she received a standing ovation.
