Caitlin Clark, a basketball phenom from Des Moines, Iowa, has etched her name in the history books as one of the greatest players in women’s college basketball. In her senior year at the University of Iowa in 2024, Clark achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball, surpassing the legendary Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 points. Her exceptional talent and captivating performances have not only earned her the number one overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever but have also significantly increased interest in women’s college basketball, with higher TV ratings and greater attendance.

Clark’s junior year (2022–23) was a standout season, as she raised her scoring average to 27.8 points per game and was named the women’s college basketball Player of the Year by the Associated Press. In the 2023 NCAA tournament, she delivered an unforgettable performance in the semifinal against the University of Louisville, registering an impressive stat line of 41 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. Although Iowa fell short in the national championship game against Louisiana State University, Clark’s 30-point effort was watched by a record-breaking average of 9.9 million TV viewers for a women’s title game.

The 2023–24 season saw Clark become a cultural phenomenon, with her games regularly selling out both at home and on the road, and her Instagram following reaching a remarkable one million. On February 15, 2024, in a dominant win over the University of Michigan, Clark broke Kelsey Plum’s scoring record of 3,527 points with a signature deep three-pointer just two minutes into the game. Clark finished the game with a career-high 49 points, an Iowa record, along with 13 assists. NBA Hall of Famer and TNT broadcaster Shaquille O’Neal praised Clark as the “best female collegiate player ever” after witnessing her historic performance.

Despite being a senior, Clark had the option to return for a fifth year of collegiate eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, several weeks after her record-breaking night, she announced her decision to enter the 2024 WNBA draft. In the final regular season game of her collegiate career, Clark surpassed Maravich’s mark to become the most prolific scorer in NCAA basketball history. With Clark leading the way, Iowa returned to the 2024 NCAA women’s tournament championship game, where she scored 30 points, but the Hawkeyes ultimately fell to South Carolina, 87–75.
