West Ham ‘set sights on Man United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka’ to boost right-back options – after £13.5m deal with Bayern Munich for Noussair Mazraoui collapsed

  • West Ham are reportedly eyeing Man United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka
  • A deal to sign Bayern Munich’s Noussair Mazraoui fell through at the last minute
  • Julen Lopetegui builds new defence after signing Max Kilman for £40m

West Ham have set their sights on Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka as new manager Julen Lopetegui looks to bolster his options at right-back ahead of the Premier League season.

The 26-year-old has made 190 appearances for the Red Devils, but the club are reportedly open to selling the full-back to free up funds for a summer budget move.

Vladimir Coufal was first choice at the London Stadium last season but Lopetegui has set his sights on a revamped Hammers defence after signing Max Kilman from Wolves for £40million this month.

The increased interest comes after a £13.5million deal for Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui fell through due to disagreements on the ‘agent’s side’, forcing Man United to step in at the last minute.

But any deal for the Bundesliga star would reportedly be dependent on raising funds from the sale of Wan-Bissaka, with United now lowering their demands to between £10m and £15m, according to Florian Plettenberg from Sky Sport Germany.

No agreement has yet been reached between West Ham and their Premier League rivals, but talks are expected to begin this weekend.

The English right-back is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and has been linked with Galatasaray in recent weeks.

West Ham have signed three key players so far this transfer window.

Promising youngster Luis Guilherme joined the club from Palmeiras, while goalkeeper Wes Foderingham joined on a free transfer after leaving Sheffield United.

But yesterday the East London club pulled out of the race to sign Mazraoui despite a deal already in place between the clubs.

On Thursday it was announced that the Hammers had agreed a transfer fee of £13.5m with Bayern, plus £3m in bonuses.

However, the deal failed as both parties could not agree on the terms.

This has opened the door for United to bring in the Moroccan international as they undergo a summer reorganisation that has seen the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee in recent weeks.

Erik ten Hag, who coached Mazraoui at Ajax between 2018 and 2022, sees the Bundesliga star as his main target.

The Dutch manager hopes the defender can boost Antony’s career at United on the right side of the team, having guided the Brazilian winger down the flank during two championship campaigns in the Netherlands.

The 54-year-old still believes the wide man can turn his form around and justify his £82million price tag, Guardian defeated.

Mazraoui has played 38 games for the German powerhouse since his transfer in 2022, including 28 times for his national team.
