The social media star, who has amassed over 15 million followers across his social media platforms, shared his experience with Atlanta’s long wait times, condiment surcharges, notoriety favoritism, unconventional business hours, and to-go order debacles.
Lee went on to further explain that his platform and ability to shed light on smaller businesses is based on truth and authenticity, which some people are giving him slack for. In the biggest of his nine videos about the city — which have been viewed over 95 million times — Lee expressed that at multiple restaurants, he had a hard time ordering ahead, experienced poor customer service, or his family was initially turned away only to be offered a table when the restaurant realized they were with Lee. Even when he was clear in all of his videos that his reviews were not meant in any way to disrespect the establishments he visited and that he was choosing the restaurants based on outreach or follower recommendations, Lee said his family received callouts from the restaurants that wouldn’t serve him, online threats, and so many negative responses accusing him of tearing down Black-owned businesses that he was hesitant to do another food tour again. His critiques triggered an uproar with many online, as they seemingly have been fed up with Atlanta restaurant policies for some time. However, things took a turn when social media users began leaving 1-star reviews and posting hate comments under some restaurants’ pages based on Lee’s experience. The food tester took to his TikTok account in the aftermath of the situation to address the hateful comments against him, his family, and the restaurants he reviewed. He stated:
“Every restaurant that me and my family go to we were either a) invited by the restaurant themselves or b), we was told about the restaurant a hundred plus times…99% of the time I never go to a random restaurant. With that being said, my opinion was asked for. So many narratives are being pushed, and it’s insane to me.”
