Max Scherzer is reportedly heading to Texas, pending Scherzer’s approval of the trade.
The Texas Rangers have reportedly agreed to trade for New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer, as long as the ace agrees to waive his no-trade clause.
The New York Post reported the agreement.
The report did not indicate what the Rangers were giving up in return for Scherzer. But, Scherzer asked for a meeting with team ownership after the Mets traded reliever David Robertson to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.
Since July 1, the rotation ERA of 5.12 ranks 23rd in the majors and the 1.57 strike-out to walk rate ranks last in the majors. The Rangers hadn’t had a quality start since July 18 when Nathan Eovaldi held Tampa Bay scoreless for five innings.Â
Scherzer reportedly wanted to know what direction the team was going in at both the trade deadline and in the future.
Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million deal before the 2022 season. Last year the Mets rode Scherzer to a postseason berth.
This season the Mets are under-.500 and trying to determine just how many of their assets to sell off at the trade deadline.
Scherzer, 38, is a three-time Cy Young winner and an eight-time All-Star. He his 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA this season. He won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019.
Scherzer has struggled this year to a 4.01 ERA in 107.2 innings over 19 starts. He has allowed an NL-high 23 home runs. Scherzer and Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, however, have a strong relationship. Maddux was the Washington pitching coach in 2016-17; Scherzer won Cy Young Awards in both of those seasons.
