The probe into excessive sick leave was prompted by the fact that an Eastern Cape legislature senior financial manager has been on sick leave since April 2017 while still earning more than R1.5 million per year.

The South African government has spent nearly R51 million on paying thousands of civil servants on suspension or sick leave, prompting the department of public service and administration to launch an investigation with the Public Service Commission to establish a campaign to learn how much the government spends on sick leave.
