Kaobitsa Bushy Maape, the premier of the North West, reportedly underwent a minor orthopaedic procedure in June and was still healing. The premier was admitted to Klerksdorp’s Wilmed Park Hospital for a quick orthopaedic treatment, according to a statement from the North West Provincial Government.
“The surgery was successful and Premier Maape is recuperating well, and the doctors are happy with his recovery. Members of the Executive Council and the Office of the Premier have sent their good wishes to Premier Maape, who is due to resume his normal official schedule in the coming week,” the statement read.
ZiMoja has discovered through a close acquaintance in the political community, though, that Maampe suffered a stroke following the knee surgery while still in the hospital, and he spent more than a month in the intensive care unit.
Maape was given the position of acting premier while he recovered from surgery, and Nono Maloyi, the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, took over. After Onica Medupe’s retirement as a legislator, a vacancy occurred, and Maloyi was chosen to fill it. This happened in November of last year.
