Award-winning actor Israel Matseke-Zulu is determined to break free from the trend of African actors imitating their American counterparts. Instead, he believes it’s time for actors from around the world to take notice of African talent and draw inspiration from us.

In pursuit of this vision, Matseke-Zulu has made a significant mark in Netflix’s latest film, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold. Not only does he deliver a powerful performance, but he also takes on the role of associate producer, ensuring that the film reaches audiences in over 100 countries worldwide.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Sun, Matseke-Zulu expressed his enthusiasm for this opportunity and shed light on his motivations. “This signifies personal growth and an incredible feeling of achievement,” he shared. “Seeing myself behind the scenes has been a dream come true. By taking our stories to international audiences, we are announcing our presence and saying, ‘We have arrived.’ Every actor aspires to be in the USA, to make it big in Hollywood. Now, we are shifting gears and bringing Hollywood here. We no longer need to flock to America.”

Matseke-Zulu passionately desires to see South African actors sharing the screen with Hollywood heavyweights. “We want Samuel L Jackson, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, and Denzel Washington to grace our shores and act alongside us,” he emphasized. “We aim to be equal partners, not mere extras in their films. We want to run shoulder to shoulder with them from the start of the movie until the closing credits, demonstrating our talent and proving that we belong.”

While acknowledging the challenges that arise from the country’s recent democratic history, Matseke-Zulu remains steadfast in his aspirations. “We may be progressing at a slower pace, but I want our children to see us as the idols they look up to. Let’s replace the likes of Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone with our own South African icons. We are here, and we are extraordinary,” he affirmed.

The actor also aims to showcase a side of South Africa that extends beyond politics and struggles, as these are often the only facets known by the rest of the world. “Remember Tsotsi? We won an Oscar for that film, and it marked my acting debut. It demonstrated our capability and potential. We can take our township stories to a global audience and reveal a different, vibrant aspect of our country, one that goes beyond politics and famous leaders,” Matseke-Zulu explained.

As associate producers, Matseke-Zulu and his colleagues are committed to revealing the wealth of talent and stories within South Africa. “We are on the right track,” he asserted confidently.

With his groundbreaking role in iNumber Number: Jozi Gold and his unwavering dedication to the advancement of South African cinema, GP-MaOrange (as Matseke-Zulu is affectionately known) is positioning himself as a trailblazer, leading the charge for a more inclusive and diverse global film industry.
