However, against all odds, the show made a remarkable comeback in May 2023, reintroducing beloved women and socialites from the entertainment industry. “Real Housewives of Johannesburg” showcases the opulent lifestyles and friendships of its protagonists, capturing their conversations and journeys towards success. Mbele believes that the show resonates well with South African viewers, as it portrays a world they aspire to be a part of. “Most of the wives are dreamers who lean towards being aspirational. They appreciate the finer things in life, which aligns with the entertainment industry. So, we decided to give the people what they want,” Mbele explained.
The show’s format succeeds in providing viewers with a glimpse into the lives of others, challenging preconceived notions and dispelling misconceptions. Mbele has always had a fascination with reality shows and has been able to identify authenticity where others may have been skeptical. “There is a misconception that affluent individuals are posh, snobbish, or always well-behaved. However, they are just as human as you and me; they simply live in glass houses. Fortunately, I have had the opportunity to get to know many of these wealthy yet dramatic women,” Mbele shared.
According to Mbele, the selection criteria for participants in the show go beyond expensive shoes and bags. Crass materialism is not the focus, as the aim is to present relatable issues. The key lies in creating a connection between the viewers and the women on the show. While luxurious items are an inherent part of their lifestyle, the true essence lies in the stories behind these women’s lives.
