KwaZulu-Natal has been flagged as one of provinces which have recorded a higher number of political assassinations. This is sad considering that there have been numerous attempts by police to deal with this matter.
A councillor of the Inkatha Freedom Fighters, who was assassinated few days ago, was laid to rest on Sunday. Mourners gathered to bid him farewell, and emphasised that something needs to be done to quell these political killings that have taken numerous lives.
The funeral service of the late Inkatha Freedom Party councillor Innocent Killer Mkhwanazi was held in Msane, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The councillor was shot and killed last week. His death marks the 17th assassination of a councillor in Kwa-Zulu Natal province in less than a year.
Looking at these statistics, it is clear that this is a call for extreme action to be taken against this trend. Social critics said it is worrisome that councillors are the ones who are being targeted because they are always on the ground working with people, while their leaders will be sitting comfortably in their gated residences.
The fight for positions, and the benefits that come with one being a councilor, are some of the stated reasons why there are so many political killings happening across the country with Kwa-Zulu Natal province recording high numbers.
