SA Grammy-award-winning composer allegedly ordered by the USA government to return the Green card

A Green Card holder is a permanent resident that has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. You can become a permanent resident in several ways, including:sponsorship by a family member or U.S. employer;

refugee or asylee status or other humanitarian programs; or individual filing.

“The US passport remains the property of the US Government and must be surrendered upon demand. You are requested to immediately return US passport number **** along with any other valid US passports issued to you, to the bearer of the letter. Any further use of a US passport is a felony.” Zimoja wrote about the letter that was addressed to Lebohang Morake about his Green Card by the USA Consulate General ordering him to return back the Green Card.

Lebohang Morake, known as Lebo M, is a Soweto born producer and composer, known for his songwriting and vocal work on the soundtracks to films such as The Lion King movies, The Power of One and Outbreak. When he was a young man, he left South Africa for exile in Lesotho at the age of 15 and he was performing in clubs in Maseru. Morake left South Africa for Lesotho. Tim Thahane helped Morake apply to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, in New York coordinating with the TransAfrica organization to send the singer to the United States. Morake lived at first in New York, again playing in restaurants and bars, and was supported by Black churches to attend music school. Morake moved to Los Angeles when he was 18 to pursue a music career. Lebo M went on to co-produce, co-write and perform numerous film soundtracks with Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith and James Newton – Howard.

Lebo’s green card and passport were revoked by the Consulate General of the USA because of debt.
