President Cyril Ramaphosa has committed to eradicating the persistent issue of load shedding in South Africa by the year 2024, offering a ray of hope to a nation that has grappled with power cuts affecting every sector of society. Acknowledging the far-reaching ramifications of rolling power cuts that have plagued the country in recent years, Ramaphosa underscored his government’s dedication to rectifying the energy crisis.

Ramaphosa’s statements were made during a visit to the Turffontein Racecourse, located south of Johannesburg, on Saturday, August 19, 2023. He addressed key ANC structures and outlined the government’s strategies to address the energy challenge. Stressing the government’s unwavering commitment to the issue, he stated, “Energy has been a significant setback for us, but we are diligently working on it. We are confident that by 2024, the energy crisis will be a thing of the past as we ramp up energy generation and focus on improving transmission. The government is actively engaged, working day in and day out to address this issue.”

Ramaphosa’s assertion that ending load shedding is of paramount importance is rooted in the upcoming 2024 national elections. The president emphasized the correlation between resolving the energy crisis and fostering job creation, thereby addressing another critical concern facing the nation.

The President’s commitment echoes the sentiment expressed by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, who had previously stated that Eskom, the state-owned power utility, would manage to resolve the power crisis before the close of 2023. In a statement made in July to ANC delegates in Boksburg, Mbalula highlighted improvements witnessed at Eskom and conveyed his conviction, saying, “We are convinced that we can eliminate load shedding by the end of December 2023 if our government comrades remain steadfast in adhering to the Energy Action Plan adopted by the ANC NEC in February 2023.”
