The Zululand region witnessed a second political killing in a week when Mtubatuba-based IFP Councillor Innocent Mkhwanazi was fatally gunned down on Monday.
Popularly known as ‘Killer’, Mkhwanazi served on the uMkhanyakude District municipal council.
The shooting took place on the R618 near Nordale, between Mtubatuba and St Lucia.
Mkhwanazi’s family has said there was nothing suspect that could have led to his murder.
Qhina Mkhwanazi, an IFP Mtubatuba municipal council member who identified Killer as a son, said the family is overwhelmed by Monday’s fatal shooting.
“I’m at his home at kwaSomkhele as we speak. He had two houses; one here and one in Nordale, and the situation is sour,” said Qhina Mkhwanazi on Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said Mtubatuba SAPS received reports of the shooting at around 4:40pm.
Naicker said when the police arrived at the scene, they met with the surviving occupants of the vehicle in which Killer was travelling, who said they were heading in an easterly direction when they came under attack.
Naicker said the police were told by the two men that they came across two motor vehicles whose occupants began shooting at them.
Naicker added that a third person who was in another vehicle also sustained gunshot wounds.
Qhina Mkhwanazi said the family ‘knew nothing’, and that he spent most of his time with the murdered councillor. He, too, ‘knew nothing’ about ‘conflicts’ that could have led to the murder.
He further said, with regards to politics there was nothing suspect that could have prompted Killer’s murder.
