Solly Msimanga, the Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng, has signaled the commencement of an intense battle for the upcoming 2024 elections. Msimanga’s reaffirmation of leadership came after a tightly contested race within the party, wherein he secured re-election against fellow party member Khumo Ramulifho.

Addressing the press following the conclusion of the provincial congress on Saturday, Msimanga emphasized that the internal competition for positions had concluded, and the collective focus of the party was now squarely on the impending elections scheduled for the following year. The electoral process witnessed the participation of over 700 DA members, culminating in Msimanga’s retention of his position as the provincial leader. This victory marked his second term in office, having initially assumed the role in 2020.

Msimanga’s remarks carried a sense of urgency as he highlighted the critical issues ailing the province. He voiced grave concerns over the deteriorating state of essential services, pointing to the collapsing state of hospitals, roads, infrastructure, and schools. Concerns about public safety were also underscored, with Msimanga emphasizing the need for a robust and effective police force to combat crime and ensure citizens’ security.

“The people of Gauteng are speaking loud and clear – they demand transformative change,” Msimanga proclaimed. “Their aspirations center around a thriving economy that benefits all citizens, not just a few. They yearn for cities capable of delivering top-tier services, a law enforcement agency unafraid to confront criminals head-on, and world-class healthcare and education systems. Moreover, they insist on equality in opportunities, irrespective of their place of origin. The safety of our women, mothers, and grandmothers as they navigate the streets is non-negotiable, and the decay of our infrastructure must come to an end.”

Msimanga, while addressing his party faithful, steered their focus beyond internal party dynamics. He urged his fellow Democrats to direct their energy and strategies towards the formidable external challenge – their political opponents. “The true battle lies beyond our party borders,” Msimanga asserted. “While unity within our ranks is vital, we must align our efforts to face the opponents who stand before us. We cannot afford to be consumed by internal divisions; the moment demands solidarity.”

Supporting Msimanga’s resolute stance, DA’s national leader, John Steenhuisen, echoed the significance of Gauteng in the upcoming elections. Steenhuisen projected that, in collaboration with coalition partners, the DA could potentially seize the province in 2024 if the African National Congress (ANC) fails to secure more than 50% of the total votes.
