Mzansi Left Traumatized After a Stolen Truck Was Caught Carrying a Corpse to Mozambique

A stolen trailer from Johannesburg was discovered in Mpumalanga, South Africa, with a shocking and distressing finding – a corpse inside the trailer. The incident involved a taxi transporting the stolen trailer, which was on its way to Mozambique with passengers on board.

Following the discovery, the Mpumalanga police took prompt action, and they were able to apprehend the taxi driver, identified as 28-year-old Nhlanhla Mkhabela. He was arrested on the evening of Thursday last week around 19:00 after a tracking company alerted the police about the stolen trailer’s location on the N4 in Malelane.

Upon intercepting the taxi, the police conducted a search of the stolen trailer, leading to the grim discovery of a corpse inside a coffin. The authorities found out that the deceased was being transported to Mozambique for burial. They subsequently made arrangements with a local funeral parlour to ensure that the corpse could be properly transported to its final destination.

The situation raised questions about how Mkhabela planned to pass through border controls with a corpse in the trailer since a corpse can only be legally transported in a hearse. This aspect remains unknown and is likely to be a subject of investigation during the legal proceedings.

The Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, praised the cooperation and partnership displayed by the tracking company and the police that led to the recovery of the stolen trailer. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the situation for the bereaved family and expressed concern that, had the trailer not been recovered, it might not have returned to the country, considering it was initially reported stolen.

As of the latest update, Nhlanhla Mkhabela, the taxi driver, is set to appear for a bail application on 7 August at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in Tonga. Further investigations into the incident are likely to take place to understand the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the theft of the trailer and the transportation of the deceased.
