Since Sunday morning, Thabo Mbeki, a former president of South Africa and leader of the African National Congress, has been a hot topic.
Earlier that day, during the Economic Freedom Fighters’ ten-year anniversary birthday celebration event held at the FNB Stadium, leader Julius Sello Malema had sang a song about the fight against apartheid.
In response to Malema’s singing of the “kill the Boer” song, some people, disproportionately from the white community, began criticising him.
After Thabo Mbeki’s explanation of the meaning of the song performed by Julius Sello Malema on Saturday, the topic quickly became a topic of conversation.
“This is not a statement, and none of these African youth would see it as such if I told them. Similar art forms are referred to by the Xhosa word igwijo. When it comes to politics, Igwijo makes no statement at all. Thabo Mbeki explains that “…it’s a chant.”
Comments:
“Leave Julius Malema alone, he was singing a struggle song, its represent our struggle, President Mbeki gave context to this song long time ago, we don’t have to always explain ourselves to white people.”

This is a slogan Julius Malema was taught to chant by the late Lion of The North Peter Mokaba…..at some point former President Mbeki was called upon to speak and defend Mokaba on this slogan………. pic.twitter.com/CwL5Vh6f09

“Kill The Boer”
Was former President Thabo Mbeki correct in his assertion at the TRC, that the phrase is not a statement? pic.twitter.com/Eu1HLJg5g5
