Hellen Suzman was a humanitarian who believed that all humans are equal, regardless of race, nationality and creed and that some laws were created out of one’s opinion of other people. The apartheid laws were created out of opinion by the Afrikaner people that Blacks were inferior to whites. In the 1961 South African general election that saw Henrik Verwoerd wins the elections, all the other Progressive MPs lost their seats, while Suzman retained hers of her party Progressive Party by a margin of just 564 votes. This left Suzman as the sole parliamentarian unequivocally opposed to apartheid for 13 years from 1961 to 1974.
Verwoerd once said to her in Parliament, i have written you off”. Suzman replied and the whole world has written you off. Now, there is a human rights foundation after her that fights for human rights in South Africa but some black South Africans are not happy with it. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who is in Marshalltown where at least 73 people died in a fire, says NGOs should work with government instead of going to court to prevent the removal of people occupying hijacked buildings. Hellen Suzman foundation is accused of taking the government to court.
