African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina has denied knowledge of alleged attempts to request money from Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to influence her impeachment inquiry. The Hawks, South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit, have applied for a court order to obtain cellphone records of ANC Members of Parliament implicated in allegations of bribery and extortion involving Mkhwebane.

The cellphone records include audio recordings, phone calls, SMSes and WhatsApp messages. According to reports, the recordings allegedly implicate Majodina, as well as ANC MP Bongani Bongo and ANC provincial treasurer Danny Dyantyi, in a scheme to bribe Mkhwebane to make the parliamentary probe into her fitness to hold office go away.

Mkhwebane has played some of the recordings in public, but the authenticity of the recordings has not been verified. Majodina has denied any wrongdoing, saying that she is “not aware of any such allegations” and that she “has never solicited or received any money from anyone in connection with the impeachment inquiry.”

The Hawks have not yet commented on the application for the court order. The allegations against Majodina and the other ANC MPs are serious, and if they are true, they could have significant implications for the ANC and for South African politics as a whole. The ANC is already facing a number of challenges, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. These new allegations could further damage the party’s reputation and make it more difficult for the ANC to govern effectively.

The Hawks’ investigation into these allegations is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether any charges will be filed. However, the allegations have already cast a shadow over the ANC and South African politics as a whole.
