Rapulane Mothlabane’s mixes can be heard every Thursday afternoon on the Lunchtime Shandis with Slujah show, which airs between midday and 3pm.

Mothlabane, who lives in Kwamaqoma (formerly Fort Beaufort), can be heard after 2.30pm, playing his Gqom music to close the show with a bang.

Before joining the station, Mothlabane hosted different shows at Mdantsane FM.

His last show at Mdantsane FM was Lunchtime Get Together, which aired weekly, before he decided to look for greener pastures in November last year.

Mothlabane, popularly known as Malume Womdantso, said before he landed the slot he would occasionally play at the station.

He fell in love with the arts as a child and his teacher and friend believed he had talent, he said.

“My grade 1 teacher used to call me Michael Jackson,” he said.

Mothlabane said his talent for Djing was not new to his family.

His older brothers, Lebo Mothlabane and Vuyisa Nomngcoyiya, used to DJ, and he learnt the basics from them.

To hone his skills, Mothlabane enrolled in a short course in sound engineering at Boston College Introduction to Ableton Live Composition & Production but was unable to complete it because of financial constraints.

The artist said he played on TRUFM on July 13 and negotiations towards him becoming the show’s resident DJ started on July 20.

He had not expected this, Mothlabane said.

He said becoming a resident DJ at the SABC means so much to him and his career.
