Most recently, on Friday of last week, Mkhwebane was expected to indicate whether she would present any final closing arguments regarding the allegations outlined in the motion before the committee. However, she failed to provide a response. This follows her previous noncompliance with the committee’s inquiries and her failure to address the questions posed to her or indicate whether she intended to make any closing arguments, among other crucial matters.
Chairperson Qubudile Dyantyi, who oversees the Section 194 Inquiry, confirmed that Mkhwebane missed yet another deadline. In light of her consistent lack of cooperation with the committee, Dyantyi now has the authority to instruct the evidence leaders to expedite the process of summarizing the case. Additionally, the committee may convene a meeting earlier than originally scheduled, before the 28th, during which they would formulate a recommendation to be presented to the National Assembly.
Dyantyi expressed his disappointment at Mkhwebane’s choice to evade accountability to the committee and prioritize her own interests, demonstrating a concerning disregard for the proceedings. By neglecting to engage with the committee’s inquiries and failing to seize the opportunity to address the questions raised, Mkhwebane has missed the chance to rectify any misconceptions and persuade the committee members regarding her position.
