Illegal immigration in South Africa has a multifaceted impact on various aspects of society. It’s important to note that estimating the exact number of undocumented immigrants is challenging due to their very nature, but their presence affects several areas.
On the economic front, some argue that illegal immigrants contribute to job competition and may potentially lower wages for low-skilled workers. However, others contend that they fill gaps in the labor market, particularly in sectors with high demand but limited local supply.
Meanwhile, the immediate past Mayor of Central Karoo, Mr Gayton McKenzie has criticized business owners who still hire illegal immigrants to work in their respective businesses. He stressed that the disadvantage of employing an illegal immigrant far outweighs the advantage.
He expressed dissatisfaction with those who hire illegal immigrants as maids to take care of their households, he claimed that many families have lost their lives and properties because their hired an illegal immigrant to take care of their household.
Mr Gayton McKenzie further stated that illegal immigrants have occupied virtually all the restaurants across the country because the owners of these businesses assume that South Africans are lazy, hence the need to hire a foreign national to do the job.
