A special prosecutor announced on Monday that Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former sanitation minister of Ghana, had been detained for suspected corruption. Cecilia Abena Dapaah resigned from her position over the weekend after her housekeepers were accused of stealing more than $1 million in cash from her residence.
Dapaah has denied any wrongdoing, but the case has drawn criticism from Ghana’s opposition, which questioned why a minister would have such significant sums of money in her home.
According to the special prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, Dapaah was arrested on Monday “in relation to suspected corruption and corruption-related offences involving large amounts of money.”
Cases of corruption involving government employees, judges, or high-ranking members of political parties are handled by Ghana’s special prosecutor’s office.
The arrest took place as Ghana sought a $3 billion loan from the IMF in response to the nation’s greatest economic crisis in years, which President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration is currently dealing with.
In order to select a candidate to contest in the election of the following year, Akufo-Addo’s NPP party is preparing for primaries later this year.
Dapaah submitted her resignation in a statement on Saturday, denying claims that there were such substantial sums of cash at the property while stating that she did not want to be a “hindrance” to the government.
