Floyd Shivambu was born on 1 January 1983 in Mahonisi, a rural village in Malamulele, Limpopo. He was one of seven children in a poor family that survived on selling handmade duvets and pillowcases. He attended Mphambo High School in Malamulele, where he graduated in 2001. He then moved to Johannesburg to study at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where he initially wanted to become a technician, but later switched to political studies and international relations. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree and an honours degree in these fields. He also became active in student politics and joined the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL), where he rose to become its spokesperson. He later obtained a master’s degree in political studies with distinction from Wits in 2014. Floyd Shivambu started his political career as a student leader at Wits, where he served as the president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in 2004-2005. He was also a member of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) and the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA). He joined the ANCYL in 2005 and became its spokesperson in 2008. He was also a board member of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) from 2008 to 2012. He was a loyal supporter of Julius Malema, the former president of the ANCYL, who was expelled from the ANC in 2012 for sowing divisions and bringing the party into disrepute. Shivambu was also suspended from the ANC for three years for swearing at a journalist and undermining the party’s leadership.

In 2013, Shivambu co-founded the EFF with Malema and other former ANCYL members who were disillusioned with the ANC. He became the Deputy President and lieutenant commander-in-chief of the EFF, as well as its Parliamentary Chief Whip after the 2014 general elections, where the EFF won 6.35% of the vote and 25 seats in parliament. He is also a member of the Trade and Industry Portfolio Committee and the Standing Committee on Finance in parliament. Floyd Shivambu is married to Siphesihle Pezi-Shivambu, who is also a politician and an EFF member. She is currently serving as a member of parliament for Gauteng province. The couple tied the knot in a lavish traditional wedding ceremony in Malamulele in 2017. They have one daughter named Katekani Shivambu, who was born in 2018.
