The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party suffered another setback after not winning the recent local elections. In all five divisions, the party was defeated as voters rejected their campaign efforts. With a lackluster performance and low support, the EFF will engage some soul-searching cause to continue the struggle, often receiving only 10% or less of the vote. District 12, located in the center of Middelburg and next to the Middelburg Country Club, is significant because it is part of Steve Tshwete’s district. This area is known for stainless steel production, coal mining and agriculture, being an important part of Nkangala region. In the 2021 local elections, the Democratic Alliance (DA) won this constituency by a landslide.
Although the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) managed to gain double-digit support and influence, the ANC faced a major decline in Steve Tshwete, losing 11 seats from 32 to 21. The Middelburg & Hendrina Residents Front (MHRF), a local party, also contributed to the ANC’s loss by winning seven seats. DA won the second seat with 17. In Ward 83, which includes Constantia Park and Waterkloof Glen in Tshwane, the EFF won just 2% of the vote. Similarly, in Ward 11 covering Newlands East and Newlands West in eThekwini, the EFF received only 4% of the vote. The DA won this ward in the local elections, and won seven out of eight constituencies, with one constituency contested.
The DA’s victory was achieved by a margin of more than 900 votes, although the ANC beat them in the Quarry Heights constituency by almost 950 votes. The turnout in areas won by the DA was greater than that of Quarry Heights, the only area carried by the ANC. In Alfred Duma Ward 29 in uThukela, the EFF faced another defeat, receiving only 1% of the vote. Finally, in Ward 107 which includes Parklands and Table View in Cape Town, the EFF won only 2% of the vote.
