Durban Film Festival Presents Captivating Documentary London Recruits

The Durban International Film Festival recently hosted a sneak preview of the captivating documentary film, “London Recruits,” which unveils the remarkable story of courageous activists recruited in Britain during the 1960s and ’70s. These brave individuals were enlisted to clandestinely spread the message inside South Africa that the banned African National Congress (ANC) was still alive and fervently fighting against the oppressive apartheid regime.

The documentary sheds light on the involvement of former Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils in the recruitment and training of these young people for an audacious propaganda campaign within various South African cities. One of the striking tactics employed was the distribution of over half a million leaflets through ingenious “bucket bombs” between 1967 and 1971.

Speaking at the preview, Ronnie Kasrils recalled how these bucket bombs, upon detonation, would disperse thousands of leaflets into the air, raising awareness about the ANC’s resilience. He explained that the recruits were trained in handling these leaflet bombs and strategically placing them in crowded areas like marketplaces, train stations, and taxi ranks. Coordinating their actions in five major cities simultaneously, the activists unleashed a flurry of leaflets that caused tremendous excitement and ignited hope among the oppressed population.

The film showcases how the collaboration between director Gordon Main and South African co-producer Jacintha De Nobrega brought this incredible story to life. Main met De Nobrega at a workshop in London, and she was instantly captivated by the idea of telling this remarkable tale. With unwavering determination, De Nobrega played a pivotal role in making the project a reality. The creative synergy between the two filmmakers, coupled with the talent and can-do attitude of the region, transformed an extraordinary narrative into what promises to be an outstanding cinematic experience.

“London Recruits” is poised to be a powerful and thought-provoking cinematic journey that brings to the forefront a lesser-known chapter in the struggle against apartheid. With its release planned for 2024, the documentary is expected to resonate with audiences worldwide, celebrating the indomitable spirit of those who fought for justice and equality in the face of immense adversity.
