The enormous estate where Deputy President Mashatile resides cost R37 million, yet he didn’t pay for it. His son and son-in-law are the only directors of the corporation whose name the house is registered. His son-in-law also transacts business with the government.
According to deeds documents, the property is registered under a 99-year lease with Legacy Properties. The directors of Legacy are Mashatile’s son Thabiso and his son-in-law Nceba Nonkwelo, who is wed to his daughter Palesa, according to the company’s papers. They have been wed at least since 2006.
According to deeds office records, Legacy Properties paid for the purchase using a loan from Nonkwelo Investment Holdings (NIH), another business owned by Nonkwelo. NIH also registered an R37 million bond in its name.
People claim that during Mashatile’s tenure as MEC in Gauteng, corporations under his control paid millions to companies owned by his son and son-in-law. No work has been completed after ten years.
