Legendary musician Arthur Mafokate finds himself embroiled in yet another controversy as the Democratic Alliance (DA) challenges the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation for funding his company, 999 Music, during the 2015/2016 financial year. The DA alleges double dipping, raising questions about payments received for the New Year’s Eve Party held at Mary Fitzgerald Square in 2015.

Arthur Mafokate’s 999 Music was awarded the tender to provide entertainment at the New Year’s Eve party, boasting top acts like Black Coffee, Mafikizolo, Chomee, DJ Zinhle, and more. However, the DA now demands an investigation into Mafokate, claiming his company received payment both from the City of Johannesburg and the Sports, Arts, and Culture department.

The DA, after tabling a question in the Gauteng Legislature, uncovered that there was no Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the department and the City of Johannesburg. Despite this, 999 Music was directly paid one million rand by the department, even though it was not a partner in the event. The City of Johannesburg had already paid 999 Music a total of R711,000 for the New Year’s Eve Party. The DA insists on an investigation into why the company was paid twice for the same service.

Kingsol Chabalala, a DA member, urges Mafokate’s company to pay back the money received from the department. The DA also calls for disciplinary action against officials involved in the alleged double payment. Chabalala emphasizes that it is unacceptable for an entertainment company to receive compensation twice for the same service, especially when those funds could be used for vital community services.

This controversy adds to Mafokate’s troubles, as he is already embroiled in a Lotteries Fund fraud case. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) seized five of his properties, claiming that five NGOs received grant funding of approximately R56.3 million for projects allegedly involving Mafokate.

Despite the mounting allegations, Mafokate remains tight-lipped and instead sent out a promotional message for the upcoming “Night With the Legends” event.

The allegations surrounding Arthur Mafokate raise concerns about financial practices and accountability within the entertainment industry. The DA’s call for an investigation and repayment highlights the need for transparency and adherence to supply chain management procedures in all government dealings. As the legal battles continue, Mafokate’s reputation and career remain in the balance.
