The ANC Youth League has told the party to quit the Nelson Mandela Bay coalition for the sake of the party.
This was the sentiment shared after the first meeting of the ANCYL regional task team (RTT) on Thursday which debated the state of the party, governance and the elected regional working committee.
ANCYL RTT regional co-ordinator Zithobile Vaaltein said they had noted with concern the trust deficit between residents and the ANC in the Bay.
“The RTT is of the view that the ANC is at its weakest in the region and we don’t believe in its current form will have the capacity to mobilise the community of Nelson Mandela Bay behind the banner of the ANC leading to the general elections,” Vaaltein said.
He called on the PEC to bolster the region’s election team to include former leaders and invite activists from different sectors.
He added that the ANCYL is well aware of the enormous role vested upon the ANCYL in the region ahead of the national elections campaign and the sense of urgency underscoring this work.
“The youth league therefore committed itself to the work of building strong structures of the ANCYL across the region that will actively participate in the day-to-day work of the elections campaign,” he said.
ANC regional deputy chair and acting secretary Siphiwo Tshaka said the league should preoccupy itself with mobilising the youth.
“I just spoke to Vaaltein and clarified a few things with him, one of which was that you can’t just augment an elected structure of the ANC,” he said.
“Their statement proves they don’t know how things work in this organisation because they’re new in this leadership, with just three weeks in their positions.”
