ANC Eastern Cape unveils its wish list

The ANC leadership in the Eastern Cape is gearing up for the 2024 general elections and they have unveiled their wish list.

Party members have compiled lists of preferred candidates for the National Assembly and the provincial legislature, and party insiders leaked the lists to the Dispatch this week.

The list for potential provincial leaders is titled: “Eastern Cape Provincial Perspective — Province to Province List”.

There are two more documents containing names of preferred MPS.

Insiders said with the two documents relating to MPS, the difference was that one contained preferred leaders from the province who were likely to go to parliament, while the other listed leaders from the national space who could be earmarked for parliamentary spots.

Some leaders appear on more than one list.

Though Pakati is on the MPS wish list, insiders said upcoming list conferences would have the final say on nominations.

If the move to parliament materialises, it would be welcomed by party members who supported Pakati after he was axed.

At the time, they said the party’s decision to keep him on as an ordinary councillor was a “demotion”, adding that deployment to either the provincial legislature or the National Assembly would be ideal.

One staunch Pakati supporter said on Wednesday that deployment to parliament was long overdue.

“He has experience of how government works in all spheres, so being in the national parliament will not be a new thing.”

Pakati could not be reached for comment all day on Wednesday.

Former ANC MPL and MP Mike Basopu could return to the National Assembly as he appears on the list of preferred MPS.

Basopu, who became an MP in 2021, saw his stay in the National Assembly cut short because he had to make way for finance minister Enoch Godongwana earlier this year.
