“Try to be Patriotic” Popular Lawyer Castigates Media Over President Ruto’s Recent Moves

Bomet Senator and a Lawyer by Profession Hillary Sigei has joined hands with other leaders within the Kenya Kwanza Camp to castigate the media on what he termed as giving President William Ruto’s recent international address a blackout.

President Ruto made headlines during his recent France visit with his speeches on financial equality between the African continent and the other continents, as well as Environment Conservation and Climate Change getting applause and international recognition.

Speaking on Monday in an interview with KTN News, Sigei wondered why the media was focusing on negative stories, instead of being patriotic and share positive things about the president’s moves in the international arena.

“We are all aware that negative stories sell but why can’t we try for one moment to be proud of what President Ruto is doing in engaging directly with the West and do a positive story? Let’s say the engagement with the West, these trips and the engagements locally.”

“Why can’t we look for the positive sides of all the things happening? I am sure the media will still sell and in turn focus on how many this will attract as many people as possible.”

“That way I am sure we will turning a different trajectory on how we report, criticize and allow people to exercise their freedom of expression. Always writing negatives will scare away investors and that’s not patriotic on the side of the media,” said Sigei.

Sigei’s remarks were supported by the Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly and Uasin Gishu Woman Rep Gladys Shollei as well as Wiper Lawmaker from Dadaab Constituency Farah Maalim.

In his Sunday’s remarks in Kajido, President Ruto said the media is free to write what they want, and also allow criticism from others saying every Kenyan has their freedom of speech and expression.
