Since last Friday, 1.2 million signatures have been gathered, according to Azimio CEO Raila Odinga.

In his extensive campaign to get the Kenya Kwanza government to pay attention to Kenyans, Raila claimed that the introduction of the digital platform to gather signatures online on Tuesday is a key component.

At the Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre on Tuesday, Raila announced that 1.2 million signatures had been gathered as of that day.83aac45cfff64e1592e9745f7b8fcaf1?quality=uhq&resize=720

Charles Kanjama, a constitutional attorney, claims that despite the lack of a constitutional foundation, the collection of signatures is a smart political manoeuvre.

“There is no space for signatures in the constitution. This is just a political move. However, if a Member of Parliament wants to show that the country is in support of the impeachment, the signatures will act as that. They are just a form of public participation and can be attached to the motion when presented,” said Kanjama.fe1b7c18323b4b93bf0e0494f3de5d92?quality=uhq&resize=720

He contends that only the procedures outlined in Article 145 of the Constitution permit the impeachment of a serving president.

“For impeachment, 117 of the members of the National Assembly who make up a third of the house will move the motion to Parliament. If approved by two-thirds of the members (that is 234), the motion moves to Senate where they shall hear charges against the president and investigate the matter,” said Kanjama.dcf7367e6bc9466ea0fdffd92a901a80?quality=uhq&resize=720

Raila is set to continue with the protests next week having announced three consecutive days of demonstrations across the country. The repercussions that might be witnessed are expected to mount. This comes shortly after the government vowed to never back down.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has today sounded a stern warning toward the protesters. He has also formed different General Service Unit bases across the country to do with the demonstrators physically.

It is therefore alarming to wait and see how the two flamboyant leaders will face off.
