A time like this in 2022, former Baringo County senator Gideon Moi was very active in politics. This has suddenly changed.

Being a member of the former first family, the KANU chairman’s loud silence has not gone unnoticed even as people begin to question his prolonged political absence.

Being a key member of the opposition Azimio la Umoja coalition, Moi ought to be one of those on the front line in the protracted battle with the government of President William Ruto.

But things have never been that way. Only ODM party leader Raila Odinga, his Wiper Party counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka, have been left to drive opposition agenda inside and outside Parliament.

Though he is expected to remain politically neutral, former President Uhuru Kenyatta has been making occasional appearances in opposition meetings and activities.

On Friday, during the interdenominational prayer service for the victims of police brutality which has been organized by the opposition, Moi was conspicuously absent.

But for Moi, the son of Kenya’s second President Daniel Arap Moi, he has been missing in action with his whereabouts remaining unknown.

Though his KANU party is a powerful member of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, Moi’s loud silence is no doubt unsettling waters in the opposition outfit.

Could it be that he does not want to appear to be opposing Dr Ruto, a move that will damage his reputation in Rift Valley?

It is possible that the son of former President is secretly participating in opposition activities as a strategy not to upset his support base in the region where President Ruto hails.
