Just where on earth is Amos Kimunya? This is one of the questions many Kenyans could be asking. Very few people know the whereabouts of the man who once wielded too much influence and power at the height of his checkered political career.

During the era of the late President Mwai Kibaki, Kimunya always found himself at the centre of controversy. But he had the ear of the Head of State who entrusted him with the powerful Finance docket.

It was the historic 2002 general election that thrust him into the national limelight when he rode on the Narc wave to win the Kipipiri MP seat. And he would immediately find himself in the cabinet as Lands Minister.

Haunted by the sale of the Grand Regency hotel, Kimunya would go on to pay a heavy price in 2013 when he lost his Kipipiri MP seat.

But five years later, the former minister made a swift comeback when he recaptured the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

In 2020, following the ouster of Aden Duale as the National Assembly Majority leader, Dr Kimunya found himself at the centre of power once again when he was picked by the then President Uhuru Kenyatta to steer his agenda in Parliament.

Dr Kimunya would go on to become a member of Uhuru’s inner sanctum in the run up to the 2022 general election. But he enjoyed the trappings of power, the political tectonic plates in Mount Kenya region were moving very fast. And just like that, his goose was cooked.

He offered himself for re-election on a Jubilee Party ticket but faced a worthy opponent in Wanjiku Muhia of UDA. He lost.

Now in the political wilderness again, Dr Kimunya has decided to go silent even as his supporters and rivals alike are left guessing on his real game plan going forward.

As one of the senior most politicians in Mount Kenya, Kimunya’s silence has not gone unnoticed. But what is he up to?
