Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has broken silence after videos and photos of President Ibrahim Traore being received in his country emerged. Traore had completed his tour to Russia where he attended the Russia-Africa summit.
“Noma sana. Captain Ibrahim Traore was given a hero’s welcome by thousands of his supporters shortly after arriving home from Russia where he attended the Russia-Africa summit,” Sonko said.
Captain Ibrahim Traore, the junta leader of Burkina Faso, attended the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg. During the summit, Traore held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and Russia.
Traore expressed his country’s desire to deepen ties with “true friends” like Russia, especially as relations with Western countries become strained. He also sought Russia’s assistance in establishing a nuclear power plant in Burkina Faso to address the country’s energy needs and potentially export electricity to neighboring nations. The meeting took place after African leaders urged Putin to support their mediation efforts in the Ukraine conflict and renew a crucial grain export deal.
